The lead magnets that work best for accounting and tax firms are narrow, useful and personal: an interactive checkup that returns a written report on the prospect's own situation, such as a Tax Opportunity Report or a "Should I be an S corp?" assessment. Static PDFs still have a place, but they tell you nothing about the reader and give you no natural reason to follow up.

## Key takeaways

- A lead magnet is something useful a prospect gets in exchange for contact details; for accounting firms the best ones answer a specific question the prospect already has.
- Interactive assessments qualify the lead while capturing it, because the answers tell you the entity type, revenue band and planning needs before the first call.
- Score leads on two axes: fit from their answers and intent from what they do afterward, such as opening the report and returning to your site.
- AICPA Code 1.600.010 treats promotion that creates false or unjustified expectations of favorable results as false, misleading or deceptive, so no guaranteed-savings headlines.
- Circular 230 Section 10.30 requires practitioners to keep copies of direct mail and e-commerce communications, with a list or description of recipients, for at least 36 months.

## What is a lead magnet for an accounting firm?

A lead magnet is a free resource or tool a firm offers in exchange for a prospect's name and email, so the firm can follow up. Checklists, guides, calculators, webinars and self-assessments are all lead magnets.

For accounting firms the test is simple. A good lead magnet attracts the clients you want, filters out the ones you do not, and leaves you with a specific reason to start a conversation. A generic "10 tax tips" PDF fails all three: it draws DIY filers, students and other preparers, and when someone downloads it you know only their email address.

## Which lead magnets work for accounting and tax firms?

Match the lead magnet to the service you want to sell and the client you want to attract. The table compares the common formats by what each one tells you about the lead.

| Lead magnet | Format | Best for attracting | What you learn about the lead |
| ---------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Tax Opportunity Report checkup | Interactive, personalized report | Business owners who suspect they overpay | Entity, revenue band, staffing, retirement plan, deductions in use |
| "Should I be an S corp?" checkup | Interactive, personalized report | Sole proprietors and LLC owners with rising profit | Net profit range, owners, payroll readiness, state |
| Year-end planning checkup | Interactive, personalized report | Higher-income households and owners in Q4 | Income changes, retirement contributions, gains and losses |
| Real estate or short-term rental checkup | Interactive, personalized report | Investors with one or more properties | Property count, rental type, participation hours |
| Entity comparison chart | Static PDF | Startups choosing a structure | Email only |
| Tax deadline calendar | Static PDF or calendar file | Broad audience, existing clients | Email only |
| Document checklist for tax season | Static PDF | Individuals switching preparers | Email only |
| Webinar on new tax law | Live or recorded event | Owners and advisors who want context | Attendance and questions asked |

Static pieces are cheap to make and useful for nurturing existing contacts. Interactive checkups take more setup but are the ones that start consultations, because the prospect leaves with something written about their own situation.

## Why are interactive tax assessments better than static PDFs?

An interactive assessment is a short questionnaire that scores or interprets the answers and returns a result specific to the person who took it. For a tax firm, the strongest version returns a written report, not just a score.

### The four advantages

- **It qualifies at capture.** A completed "Should I be an S corp?" checkup tells you net profit range, number of owners and whether payroll exists. You know whether to call before you call.
- **It delivers specific value.** A report that says "your answers suggest these three areas are worth reviewing" is more useful to the reader than a generic guide, and it shows how your firm thinks.
- **It creates the follow-up.** The report ends with the questions only a conversation can answer. The next step is obvious: book a call to go through it.
- **It shows your judgment.** When a professional reviews every report before it goes out, the prospect sees the firm's voice and standards before engaging.

### The trade-offs

Interactive checkups take longer to build and need someone to review each report. They also carry more compliance risk than a calendar PDF because they talk about the prospect's own situation, so the language has to stay at "worth reviewing" rather than "you will save." Treat the report as an invitation to a planning conversation, not as advice.

### How to design a checkup that leads to consultations

1. **Pick one audience and one decision.** "S corp election for profitable sole proprietors" beats "tax help for small business."
2. **Keep it to 10 to 16 questions.** Use bands and multiple choice, not exact figures.
3. **Ask for contact details last,** after the prospect has invested in the answers, and say exactly what they will receive.
4. **Write the report instructions like a memo template:** what to cover, the tone, what never to promise, and the call to action.
5. **Review every report before it is sent.** Fix anything that sounds like advice without facts behind it.
6. **End with one next step,** usually a booking link for a short review call.

## How should you qualify and follow up on leads from a lead magnet?

Lead scoring is a way of ranking leads by how likely they are to become good clients. Use two separate measures so you do not confuse a curious prospect with a qualified one.

- **Fit** is how closely the lead matches your ideal client, based on their answers: entity type, revenue band, complexity, location and the services they need.
- **Intent** is how engaged they are right now, based on behavior: opening the report email, clicking the booking link, returning to your site, taking a second checkup.

| | Low intent | High intent |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **High fit** | Personal email from a partner referencing one point in their report | Call within one business day |
| **Low fit** | Newsletter only | Short reply with a referral or a fixed-scope offer |

A follow-up sequence for a checkup lead can be short:

1. **Day 0:** the reviewed report, with a booking link for a 20-minute review.
2. **Day 3:** a short note expanding on the most relevant topic in their report.
3. **Day 7:** a relevant example of how your firm approaches that topic, without client names or invented results.
4. **Day 14:** a direct question: "Would it help to go through this before year end?"
5. **After that:** move them to your newsletter and stop. Do not keep contacting someone who has said they are not interested.

When a lead books, hand off cleanly into your [client onboarding process](https://oneform.si/blog/accounting-firm-client-onboarding/) so the answers they already gave do not get asked again. For how to turn the review call into a paid engagement, see [how to sell tax planning services](https://oneform.si/blog/how-to-sell-tax-planning-services/).

## Where should accounting firms place lead magnets?

### Your website

Embed the checkup on the service page it relates to: the S corp checkup on your entity and payroll page, the year-end checkup on your tax planning page. Add a button in the site header and a popup on high-traffic blog posts. Each placement should match what the visitor was already reading.

### Email to your existing list

Existing clients are the warmest audience for a planning checkup. Be careful with lists built from tax returns: under Treasury regulation 301.7216-2(n), a preparer may compile a list of limited return information (names, contact details, entity classification and return form number) and use it to send tax information or solicit additional tax return preparation services, but not to solicit any other service or product ([26 CFR 301.7216-2](https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/26/301.7216-2)). Using return information to market advisory, wealth or other non-preparation services generally needs the client's consent. Our post on [Section 7216](https://oneform.si/blog/ai-in-tax-practice-section-7216/) covers consent in more detail.

### Social and paid channels

Short posts that lead with the question ("Is your LLC making enough profit for an S corp election to be worth a look?") and link to the checkup work better than posts about the firm. Paid campaigns should point to one checkup with one audience.

### Referral partners

Bankers, attorneys, financial advisors and real estate agents can share a checkup link with their own clients. Two AICPA rules apply. If you pay or receive a referral fee for a CPA's services, the Commissions and Referral Fees Rule requires disclosure to the client ([AICPA Code 1.520.001](https://www.aicpa-cima.com/resources/landing/aicpa-ethics)). And when you perform services for clients of a third party, you should determine that the third party's promotional efforts comply with the advertising rule, because members must not do through others what they cannot do themselves (AICPA Code 1.600.010).

## What advertising rules apply to CPA and tax firm lead magnets?

Lead magnets are advertising and solicitation. CPAs answer to the AICPA Code and their state board; CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents who practice before the IRS also answer to Circular 230.

### AICPA Code of Professional Conduct

The Advertising and Other Forms of Solicitation Rule (1.600.001) says a member in public practice shall not seek clients by advertising or solicitation that is false, misleading or deceptive, and prohibits solicitation through coercion, over-reaching or harassing conduct. Interpretation 1.600.010 lists promotional efforts that are considered false, misleading or deceptive, including those that create false or unjustified expectations of favorable results, imply an ability to influence a court or regulator, or quote a fee when a substantial increase was likely and not disclosed ([AICPA Code of Professional Conduct](https://www.aicpa-cima.com/resources/landing/aicpa-ethics)). Check your state board's rules too; many add their own requirements on use of the CPA title and advertising.

### Circular 230 Section 10.30

Treasury Department Circular No. 230, which governs practice before the IRS, has its own solicitation rules in Section 10.30 ([31 CFR 10.30](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-31/subtitle-A/part-10/subpart-B/section-10.30)):

- No public communication or private solicitation may contain a false, fraudulent, coercive, misleading or deceptive statement or claim.
- Enrolled agents may not use the term "certified" or imply an employer or employee relationship with the IRS.
- An uninvited written or oral solicitation, where otherwise permitted, must be clearly identified as a solicitation and, if applicable, identify the source of the information used to choose the recipient.
- A practitioner may not keep trying to contact a prospective client who has said they do not want to be solicited.
- Published fee schedules must be honored for at least 30 calendar days after the last date they were published.
- Copies of direct mail and e-commerce communications, with a list or description of the people they went to, must be kept for at least 36 months from the last transmission or use.

Headlines like "Save $15,000 with an S corp" or "Cut your taxes in half" are the clearest risk. Describe what the checkup reviews, not what the prospect will save.

## How do you measure whether a lead magnet is working?

Do not borrow conversion benchmarks from other industries. Track your own funnel from first view to signed engagement and compare each magnet against itself over time.

1. **Views to starts:** are visitors interested enough to begin?
2. **Starts to completions:** is the checkup too long or asking something people hesitate on? Look at drop-off by question.
3. **Completions by fit:** what share of completed leads match your ideal client?
4. **Report opens and clicks:** are people reading what you sent?
5. **Calls booked:** completions that turn into a review call.
6. **Engagements signed and first-year fees:** the number that decides whether the magnet stays.
7. **Time to first contact:** hours from completion to a personal reply.

## How to run a lead magnet with OneForm

OneForm is built for this pattern: forms in, reports out. Start from the [Tax Opportunity Report](https://oneform.si/templates/tax-opportunity/) or [Should I Be an S Corporation?](https://oneform.si/templates/should-i-be-s-corp/) template, or the [Year-End Tax Planning Checkup](https://oneform.si/templates/year-end-planning/) for Q4, and adjust the questions with OneFormAI. Each response produces an AI-drafted report written from your firm's instructions; your team edits and approves it before it is sent as a branded [PDF report](https://oneform.si/product/reports/), now or on a schedule.

The [leads view](https://oneform.si/product/leads/) keeps one row per person across forms, scored by fit from their answers plus intent from opens, clicks and return visits.

- Embed inline on a service page, as a popup, or behind a button
- See [drop-off for each question](https://oneform.si/product/insights/) and report email opens and clicks
- Sync leads to HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce or Zoho, or export CSV
- Add a booking page for the review call, or charge for the report or call through your own Stripe account (both on every plan, Free included)

Open the [Tax Opportunity Report template](https://oneform.si/templates/tax-opportunity/) to see the questions and try it.

**Ready to try it?** You can [open the Tax Opportunity Report template](https://oneform.si/templates/tax-opportunity/) or [start free with OneForm](https://app.oneform.si/signup). No card needed.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best lead magnet for a CPA firm?

For firms selling planning or advisory work, a short interactive checkup that returns a personalized written report usually beats a static PDF, because it qualifies the lead and gives you a specific reason to follow up. Good examples are a tax opportunity checkup for business owners, an S corporation election checkup, and a year-end planning checkup. Pick the one tied to the service you most want to sell.

### How do accounting firms generate leads online?

Most firms combine search-friendly articles on specific client questions, a lead magnet embedded on the matching service pages, an email list fed by that lead magnet, referral partners who share a link, and fast personal follow-up. The lead magnet connects the rest: it turns anonymous traffic into named, scored leads and gives the firm a reason to start a conversation.

### Can CPAs advertise free tax assessments?

Yes. CPAs can advertise as long as the advertising is not false, misleading or deceptive under AICPA Code 1.600.001 and state board rules. The risk is in the claims: promising savings or results creates unjustified expectations under interpretation 1.600.010\. Practitioners subject to Circular 230 must also follow Section 10.30, including keeping copies of direct mail and e-commerce communications for at least 36 months.

### Should a lead magnet be gated behind an email form?

Gate tools and personalized reports, because the prospect has to share answers and an email to receive the result anyway. Leave basic information, such as a short summary of a tax law change, ungated so it can rank in search and build trust. Ask for contact details at the end of an interactive checkup, after the person has answered the questions and knows what they will get.

### How should accounting firms follow up on leads?

Reply personally within one business day to leads that fit your ideal client and show intent, such as opening their report or clicking the booking link. Send lower-fit or lower-intent leads a short sequence of useful notes over two weeks, then move them to your newsletter. Stop contacting anyone who says they are not interested; Circular 230 Section 10.30 prohibits persisting.
