Personalize questions with answers

Greet clients by name and repeat their earlier answers, scores or link details in later questions and on the thank-you screen.

A form feels more personal when it uses what the client already told you: "Thanks, Maya. How many employees does Harbor Bakery have?" OneForm fills in names, earlier answers, scores and details from the link as people go.

Insert an earlier answer

  1. In the builder, select the question you want to personalize.
  2. In the side panel, above Question or Description (optional), click Insert answer.
  3. Pick what to insert: First name, Full name, an earlier question, a score or a hidden field.

OneForm adds a short code where your cursor was, such as {{first_name|}} or {{field:…}}. Clients see the answer in its place.

Only questions that come before this one are offered, because later ones haven't been answered yet.

Greet people by name

Names need one switch on, so OneForm knows it may use them:

  1. Open the form's Settings tab.
  2. Turn on Personalize with names.
  3. Make sure the form asks for a name. A Contact info question does, or set a Short text question's This answer is the respondent's… to First name or Full name.

Without this switch, name codes stay blank. Codes for earlier answers, scores and hidden fields work either way.

Add a fallback

Write a word after the | in a code to show when the answer is empty. For example, Thanks, {{first_name|there}}! shows "Thanks, Maya!" or, without a name, "Thanks, there!". With nothing after the |, the code just disappears, and OneForm tidies the spaces and commas around it.

Personalize an ending

  1. In the list on the left, select the Thank-you screen or another ending.
  2. Click in the Title or Description.
  3. Open Personalize with answers and click what to insert.

A scored quiz can show the result this way, for example Audit-ready: {{var:score}} / 60.

Good to know

  • Hidden fields are details that arrive in the form's link, like ?client_id=123. Add them first in the form's Settings tab, under Hidden fields. See Pass details into a form with hidden fields.
  • Scores come from the Logic tab. See Logic and branching.
  • Where codes work: question titles and descriptions, endings, and the link of Send to a web page on an ending.

Why does my client see an empty space instead of their name?

  • Personalize with names is off. Turn it on in the Settings tab.
  • The name comes later in the form. Move the name question before the one that greets them.
  • The name question isn't marked as a name. Use Contact info, or set This answer is the respondent's… to First name.
